“NICOLEON 2009” TRIP

I. The concept / the idea.

Léon and Nicolas are two cousins who come from upper Normandy (France) and share a common passion: to ride tandem! They are both students and to achieve their passion, the two cousins have founded projects to travel throughout Europe.

In order to help them in the past and especially in the new projects, they have created the association Porte Bagage in order to make the projects official and to get financial and material help from various partners. The partners are institutions:

-         The European Union through the programme Jeunesse pour l’Europe (youth for Europe)

-         The French ministry for youth and sports

-         The Département de l’Eure (upper Normandy)

-         The city of Val De Reuil (upper Normandy)

and private donations:

-         Cartidge World™

-         Clovis Location.

The aim of the trips is to travel in an environmentally friendly way (the tandem) i.e. by minimizing the carbon prints of the two cousins, whilst also protect the environment. But the journey is not the only goal of Léon and Nicolas. They always try to meet new people, discover new places, new cultures and – maybe the most important in their project – share those experiences with children in schools. Their goal is to teach them what Europe is, how to take care of our environment (especially important in the current climate) and how to organise the trip, how to be safe on the road etc.

II. The old projects.

1)     2006 - Holland.

From June to August 2006, Léon and Nicolas started off on their first trip tandem from Val De Reuil (upper Normady) to Amsterdam (Holland) and back. The passed by Bruges and Liege (Belgium) and to Zwolle, Groningen, Zuidhofen, Zutphen, Amsterdam (Holland)…

This was their first riding tandem: they organised everything from the best way to manage their money for food and museums, to any repairs that they needed to make during the journey.

2)     2007 – project Vent d’Est (Eastern Wind).

This project was a lot bigger than the first!

Léon & Nicolas decided to travel from Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean (over 2000 km) in 30 days during August 2007! They went trough 9 East European countries: Poland, Germany, Check Republic, Slovaquie, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. For this trip they chose to travel with another tandem-couple: Élise and Félix.

During the whole trip, the two cousins and their partners kept in contact with Le centre de l’Éléphant, a structure which welcomes young people from 12 to 15 years during their free time. The aim was educate the young people on which countries they had encountered, so that they could learn about them (where the countries are, when they entered into the European Union…) and also the different culture and history.

III. 2009 – the new project: Eurotrip.

This time, Léon and Nicolas want to discover a new part of Europe.

They want to travel from France to Italy, Greece, Romania, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway, England and back to France: a hugh trip that is predicted to take 6 months (from February to August 2009)!

Even though the project is still under construction, the two cousins are sure that they will be back on the road again soon!

IV. How to help?

As the project is still under construction, Léon and Nicolas are still looking for help and support on the Eurotrip project. There are many ways to help them:

-         If you live more or less along the road that is planned, you can offer your home, a room, your garden, even a barn for the two tandem riders, would be much appreciate.

-         If you have a company that wants to establish itself in Europe, then you can contact them to sponsor them, and un return will be able to advertise your company. You could offer support in many different ways, from financial support to technical support or even transportation.

-         If you have any experience and want to offer some advice, it is always welcome!

-         Or if you would just like to support the cousins, don’t hesitate to get in contact.

All the forms of help and support are welcome; so please get in touch with them!!
